Name Stefan Hines

In what year did you train? 2018 - 2019

Which subject did you train in? Science (Biology)

Which school/s did you train in? Helena Romanes, Hylands School

Can you tell us a bit more about what you are doing now? After my time with Mid-Essex ITT I moved up to Sheffield and spent 5 years working for an Academy as part of a larger Trust. Following my NQT year I secured a TLR which involved leading on a whole school initiative with Y8s, before working my way up to 2nd in department (the main duties of which included leading the KS3 provision). After 5 years up north I decided to make the move back south and secured a job with Harris Academy in London where I now work as KS4 Co-Ordinator, Science and so am now leading our provision for the GCSE Exam year students within Science

Thinking back to your teacher training with Mid Essex ITT, can you share with us about a highlight, fond memory or funny story? The highlights were definitely the people I got to know throughout the course - some of whom I’m still really close with this many years on. The Thursday sessions were great opportunities to get together and debrief about the week; sharing experiences with others in the same situation really helped.

What was teacher training like when you trained? What were the buzzwords, latest theories or popular pedagogy? Teacher training wasn’t too dissimilar to now from what I hear from our trainees, looking at Rosenshine’s principles of instruction, AfL (now checking for understanding in my school), and more. Lots of the theory we learnt is still in practise today.

Thinking back to your teacher training, what was your key takeaway from Mid Essex ITT? The main takeaway was the confidence Mid Essex ITT built in me as a trainee through the training programme and the Thursday sessions, as well the friends I’ve made there from my course along the way

Thinking back to your teacher training, is there anyone who supported you whom you would like to recognise or thank? Not one person in particular - everyone at Mid Essex ITT was helpful and approachable, whether they were my direct tutor or not.
